MDS has created the SDK to make it easy for instrument providers to become iDDS compatible, so manufacturers can focus on how their instruments acquire data rather than how they publish the data. In a win-win for the testing industry, test facility operators will be able to purchase and use the instruments they require, [when] they require them, and the instrumentation providers will be able to develop the tools the industry needs without having to worry about interfacing with test facility measurement systems.

ONE DAS TO RULE THEM ALL

Adopting new measurement capabilities would typically involve substantial and costly facility downtime as the system was upgraded or changed. This new system will be able to accommodate both because of its inherent scalability. End users that strictly use smaller data acquisition systems, especially MRO facilities, don’t require as many measured and calculated channels. The number of channels for an engine development facility can be up to 25 times the average number for an engine MRO facility; thus, having a single data acquisition system that has the capacity to handle both is a game-changer for MDS.

LOWERING COSTS

Validating a new turbomachinery product like a commercial engine is a gargantuan feat. MDS is taking the lead on solving this challenge by chairing an industry working group to develop a standard iDDS communications protocol for data acquisition and control instruments. The new nxDAS system will be the first to market this standard protocol, demonstrating to the end users that adding new iDDS-based instruments does not have to be difficult or costly. The sub-arctic weather conditions of Thompson, Manitoba, make it an ideal location for outdoor icing tests, low temperature endurance testing, cold soak, and other adverse weather testing of flight vehicles and their propulsion systems.

The exhaust basket is designed to disperse the energy, reduces noise levels, and helps protect silencer panels and baffles in the exhaust stack.

We design industrial gas turbine engine test facilities to maximize asset utilization and return on investment by having one facility that can replace many. We accomplish this with high-throughput, multi-configuration test cells, supporting both cold-end and hot-end drive configurations within the same test cell. We have leveraged our aero engine test experience, driveline, and controls background to develop an extensive inventory of proprietary innovative “quick-connect” solutions for industrial and marine gas turbine engine testing.
